Recommended tools for some keys

Optional but handy: the spudger lifts the key without scratching or bending the mechanism, and the thin blade of the flat screwdriver unhooks the plastic hinge and helps clip it back in.

Compatible with these Logitech keyboards

On these keyboards, this genuine MX Keys key takes the place of the official one: same scissor mechanism and mounting, with a legend and finish that may differ slightly.

About the Y replacement key

Missing the Y on your Logitech MX Keys, or has it stopped responding? This is the key on its own, hinge included, ready to clip in where the old one was. The Y key is a genuine Logitech part, pre-owned, taken from a dismantled keyboard; the rubber dome is not supplied, as the one on your keyboard stays in place.

Compatibility

Across the letter and number block, the MX Keys, MX Keys S, MX Keys Mini and MX Keys for Mac share the same one-unit cap, so this Y keycap fits a full-size model and a Mini alike. Choose it by its legend — here, the QWERTY (US) layout.

The Y key: position, size and wear

On the full-size MX Keys, the Y key sits on the top letter row, just below the digits, 6th key to the right of Tab. In touch typing, it belongs to the right index finger. It also does double duty in Ctrl + Y, which redoes the undone action in most Windows programs. A key this size has no stabiliser, so all of its support comes from the X-shaped hinge and its four anchor points. When the Y key starts to lean or comes away, that hinge is nearly always what failed, well before the cap.

How to install it

Allow under a minute to refit the Y key, bare-handed or with a plastic spudger: free the old hinge if it is broken, clip the new one in the same orientation, then press straight down on the cap until you feel a soft click.

Step-by-step guide: swapping an MX Keys key and its hinge

Y key — questions

Will this Y keycap fit my MX Keys S?
It does, full-size or Mini: the Y key has the same one-unit cap on all four models. Only the legend depends on the layout — QWERTY (US) for this one.
Is the hinge included with the Y key?
Yes, the X-shaped hinge comes with the Y key — it is often the part that broke. Only the rubber dome is not supplied: it stays in place on the keyboard under the Y key, and domes are sold in packs among our spare parts.
I changed the cap on the Y key, but it still types nothing — what now?
First try the Y key on another computer or in another program, to rule out a setting. If it stays silent, look under the cap: with a split hinge it moves crooked; with a crushed or loose dome it goes down without typing.

Check your keyboard's brand

You are looking at a Logitech key. Keycap and hinge differ between brands: this key will not fit an Apple keyboard.
