Not every part of an MX Keys is a key, and most failures do not come from the cap. The X-shaped plastic hinge, which guides the vertical travel, is the part that breaks most often: when the keycap is intact, it can be replaced on its own for €6.99 (€14.99 for three, €17.99 for five). Then come the rubber return pads, the lost Unifying and Logi Bolt USB receivers, batteries that no longer hold a charge and, for heavier failures, the motherboard. Can you replace just the hinge on a Logitech MX Keys key?

Yes. On a Logitech MX Keys, MX Keys S or MX Keys Mini, a key that pops off, wobbles or sinks crooked has usually broken its hinge, not its cap. The hinge is the small white plastic X clipped onto four metal hooks under each key. If the cap is intact, only the hinge needs replacing. Lift the cap with a fingernail or a plastic spudger, remove the broken pieces of the old X, clip the new hinge onto the four hooks until it pivots freely, then press the cap down in the centre until it clicks. No special tool, no pairing and no firmware update are needed. Keyspares sells the MX Keys hinge on its own for €6.99, €14.99 for three or €17.99 for five; when the cap is cracked too, every replacement key already ships with its own hinge. Long keys such as the spacebar also rely on a metal stabiliser bar.

The key moves but no longer clicks, or presses down crooked: that is the hinge (€6.99). The key clicks but types nothing: that is the rubber pad. The keyboard powers on but no longer connects: that is the receiver (Unifying €5.99, Logi Bolt €10.99). It no longer holds a charge: that is the battery (€9.99).
