Video guide: removing and refitting a MacBook key
Apple Silicon MacBooks use a scissor-switch Magic Keyboard: the keycap clips onto a small plastic hinge. This tutorial, filmed on an M1 MacBook Air, shows the technique from 15:20 — lift the cap from the top with a thin plastic tool without prying on the hinge, then refit it and press until it clicks twice.

Every Apple Silicon MacBook uses the same kind of scissor mechanism, but function-row and Touch ID key sizes vary by chassis. The model number (A…) is printed under the machine: add it to your request if you know it.

Repair instead of replacing the top case
Out of warranty, a damaged key often means replacing the entire top case (keyboard, battery and chassis glued together). A keycap and its hinge take two minutes to swap, without opening the machine.
Touch ID cannot be replaced
The Touch ID button is paired to the logic board: a used sensor will not work in another MacBook. We only offer its keycap, not the sensor.

Does an M1 MacBook Air key fit an M2 MacBook Air?▾
Letters and numbers share the same dimensions, but the top row differs: the M1 has half-height function keys. We will list exact compatibility key by key.
When will keys be available?▾
As soon as we have sourced and disassembled keyboards in the most requested layouts. Leaving your email on a key is the best way to speed up yours.
Is the keycap enough if the hinge is broken?▾
No. If the plastic clips are broken you need the keycap and its hinge — we will sell them together.
